A creative, highly technical central or left-sided midfielder, Fran made a huge impact following his arrival at Arsenal in the summer of 2006.
The young Spaniard scored on his Gunners debut in August 2006 - a great strike against Boreham Wood in a 4-0 friendly victory. His impressive start to life in London continued when he inspired a two-goal comeback against Tottenham on his Reserves debut, setting up the first before curling in a spectacular free-kick to equalise.
Another highlight was an impressive all-round display against Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford. Merida ended the 2006/07 campaign with nine goals in 33 appearances at Under-18 and Reserve level.
