Gilberto is Arsenal's senior central midfielder and thrived in his role as Club captain in the absence of the injured Thierry Henry last season.
The Brazilian has been a virtual ever-present for the past two campaigns but found a previously unseen Midas touch in front of goal last term. Gilberto managed 10 Premiership goals - four more than in his previous four campaigns combined. He also popped up with a vital goal in the 2-1 Champions League victory over Hamburg in September.
The midfielder was always reliable under pressure too, highlighted by his two successful penalties in the first North London derby at Emirates Stadium which propelled the Gunners to a memorable 3-0 win.
At the start of the current campaign Gilberto had 59 caps for his country. In the summer he captained them to their seventh Copa America triumph, although he was suspended for the Final against Argentina after picking up two bookings in previous rounds.
At his best, Arsenal's World Cup winner is one of the Premiership's finest holding midfielders; he can win tackles, protect the back four and distribute the ball calmly and effectively. His experience will be of immeasurable value to Arsène Wenger’s side in the coming campaign.
