Mathieu joined Arsenal from Marseilles in the summer of 2004 and is now an established member of Arsène Wenger's squad.
The young Frenchman is an industrious midfielder with a great engine, a big heart and good technical ability. You can add versatility to that list of attributes after his star turn as an auxiliary left back in Arsenal’s run to the Champions League Final in 2006.
Mathieu developed the knack of scoring in important fixtures last season. Along with Kolo Toure and William Gallas he was one of three surprise scorers in the 3-0 win over Liverpool in November. Furthermore, his 78th minute strike looked to have sealed a famous victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December only for Michel Essien to spoil the day with six minutes remaining.
The France Under-21 international was called up to the full squad for the first time in January but is yet to be handed an appearance by Les Bleus coach Raymond Domenech.
